Marcus Sanchez Svensson
Since July 2005 I have been working in the research group Work Practice Laboratory (WPL) as lecturer in human work science and information technology. In January 2005 I was awarded the doctoral degree in management/sociology after five years of research studies in London at King’s College in the research group Work, Interaction and Technology (WIT). The research undertaken during the last years – and which has provided the basis for the doctoral thesis – has been concerned with video-based naturalistic studies of work and interaction with a particular interest in the ways in which tools and technology feature in complex and collaborative working environments. This research has been influenced by the recent developments in social science known as ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. The purpose of these studies is not only empirical, but is driven by an interest in exploring how such studies can inform or in other ways contribute to technology design. My research work has primarily focused on two work domains: surveillance centres on London Underground and operation rooms in a hospital in central London. The empirical investigation in the operation room is presented and discussed in my thesis “Configuring awareness: work, interaction and collaboration in operating theatres”. During my time in London I worked as doctoral student and researcher in the research projects ”Complexity in Social Science” (COSI) http://www.irit.fr/COSI/, ”PRo-active Integrated systems for Security Management by Technological, Institutional and Communication Assistance” (PRISMATICA) http://www.prismatica.com/, and Palpable Computing (PALCOM) www.palcom.dk.
My research has continued to involve detailed empirical studies of everyday activities and interaction in different domains and contexts with a specific interest in studying and analysing how people use tools and technologies. Within the next few years my intentions are to continue and develop studies of work and interaction in operation theatres and anaesthetic rooms. The teaching I am currently undertaking is closely related to my research interest. I teach on two educational programs: Interaction and Design and Ubiquitous Computing (International master program). The courses I teach relate to areas such as ethnography, workplace studies, interaction analysis, computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), human-computer interaction (HCI), participatory design (PD), and ubiquitous computing.
